Lake Placid (1999)

“I’m rooting for the crocodile. I hope he swallows your friends whole. You might want to arrest me for that too. Is that a crime? To wish the chewing of law enforcement?” – Mrs. Bickerman

Number of Times Seen – 1 (12 Nov 2020)

Brief Synopsis – After a few strange murders in a secluded lake in Maine, a group of professionals band together in order to discover what is the cause.

My Take on it – This is a film that I had never heard of before coming across it and knew nothing about it.

The cast list looked impressive and I was curious to see what they would do with them here.

This is a really fun film that feels like a mediocre version of Jaws (1976) especially given the fact that both films avoid showing the creature through most of the film in order to raise the tension level throughout.

The characters all are somewhat superficial and underdeveloped but that doesn’t hurt things too much because it isn’t really expected with a plot like this one.

The cats is great and Bill Pullman, Bridget Fonda, Oliver Platt and Brenden Gleeson all do fine job with what they are given.

Betty White has a small role and is able to steal every scene that she is in because her character is quite adamant and feisty in all that she does.

This isn’t a very deep story, but it’s still done in a very fun way that helps make things work well.

Bottom Line – Really fun film that is able to work due to the way that they keep things very suspenseful. The characters aren’t developed very well, but that is somewhat expected from this kind of film because it’s more important to see them all try to evade the dangerous animal than anything else. The cast is superb with Pullman, Fonda, Platt and Gleeson doing nice jobs with their roles. White is able to steal every scene she appears in despite it being a very small role.  Like in Jaws (1976), they manage to keep things more suspenseful by avoiding showing the creature throughout most of the film. Recommended!

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – The crocodile as CGI or animatronic has about 3 minutes and 43 seconds of screentime. (From IMDB)

Rating – Globe Worthy (7/10)
