Executive Target (1997)

“I cannot tell you what an honor and a pleasure it is to meet you in person.” – Lamar

Number of Times Seen – 1 (23 Nov 2020)

Brief Synopsis – A former stunt driver is broken out of prison in order to help with a plot to kidnap the President.

My Take on it – This is a really silly film that has some merits due to the way that the plot evolves.

The film unfortunately feels too much like a B-movie in the way things are presented and that hurts taking this story more seriously.

The cast does involve some very talented actors like Keith David, Michael Madsen and Roy Scheider, but they are given very over the top characters who just aren’t very likable.

In the role of The President, even Scheider feels underused and too cartoonist in all that he does here.

The film does have some very fun action sequences that are filled with loads of chases and explosions despite the fact that they don;t seem realistic in any way.

The film’s dialogue is delivered in a very wooden way by most of the cast and the campyness of it all is quite problematic because it is more laughable than an action thriller like this should actually be.

The scene with the garbage bag worked really well because it adds a nice twist to things.

The plot unfolds in an intriguing way, but the fact that the rest of the production is unrealistic takes away so much from the possibility of truly enjoying a story like this one which is quiet a shame.

Bottom Line – Pretty silly film that has some merits, but the B-movie feel doesn’t work well at all. The cast is mostly wooden and even Scheider who is usually quite good is underused in his role as The President. The action scenes are fun to watch even if things are far from plausible the whole way through.  The dialogue is far too campy and doesn’t help make things more enjoyable to watch at all. The garbage bag scene is quite fun because of the nice twist it adds to the story.

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Roy Scheider’s next role the same year would also be a President of the USA in The Peacekeeper (1997) another action movie. (From IMDB)

Rating – Razzie Worthy (4/10)
