“You think you’re the first? You think I got this job because I’m fat and jolly?” – Chris
Number of Times Seen – 1 (26 Nov 2020)
Brief Synopsis – A kid who receives a lump of coal for Christmas put a contract out on Santa Claus.
My Take on it – This is a film that I knew very little about before watching and that helped make it that much more intriguing.
Any film tat stars Mel Gibson these days can be hit or miss and his performace here as a modern day Santa Clause is great.
He is able to get the right tones for the character and even manages to be jolly in some scenes especially due to the in-your-face way that this film is presented.
The casting of both Walter Goggins and Marianne Jean Baptiste are also great because they add so much with their performances here.
The way that the film shows how a modern day Santa must deal with funding his operation and how the mail system to the North Pole works is done so well and actually is plausible in certain ways.
Yes, there are aspects of this story that come off a bit too silly, but they help add to the fun of it all especially as the story itself is able to move in directions that one might never expect them to go.
Bottom Line – Such a clever concept that works so well due to the performances of Gibson, Goggins and Jean-Baptiste. The idea to show a modern day Santa Claus needing to work within our world is great especially while dealing with how he needs to fund his operation. Gibson has been erratic over the years with the projects that he takes on, but his portrayal here is great and even jolly in certain points due to the in-your face aspect of the story. The plot plays out well and is so much fun to watch unfold despite parts seeming a bit too silly, because they just add to the fun of it all as things move in directions one might never expect. Recommended!
MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – When Chris Kringle was listening to the radio, he hears two kids throw a bowling ball off an overhand on the freeway. This was based on a true event. Beavis and Butthead also did that on one of their cartoon episodes (From IMDB)
Rating – Globe Worthy (8/10)
