Infidel (2019)

“We’re not afraid to die… That’s why we’ll win.” – Ramzi

Number of Times Seen – 1 (2 Dec 2020)

Brief Synopsis – After a political blogger is kidnapped after speaking out against Islam at a conference in Cairo, his wife, a state department employee tries to do all she can to find him and get him free.

My Take on it – This is a film that I recall hearing about a few months ago and was quite interested in seeing what they would do with this kind of premise.

Unfortunately, it’s not as powerful as one might hope for such an idea.

Jim Caviezel is a great actor and does a nice job here despite the fact that something feels off with his performance throughout.

The film’s plot is paced well and they find ways to raise the suspense level along the way die to some clever twists and turns that work quiet well in establishing the unexpected realm of the Middle East which can surprise again and again.

The film presents the different sides of this conflict quite well and that actually helps make things come across in a more realistic fashion which in turn makes things even more engaging to watch as it unfolds.

Some of the scenes of the film don’t work as well as others but they still are able to show the harsh realities of the region that things film takes place in.

Bottom Line – Intriguing idea that just isn’t as powerful as one might hope from a premise like this one. Caviezel does a nice job in the lead role but something feel off the entire time. The plot moves at a nice pace and they are able to find ways to raise the suspense level since they have some nice twists and turns along the way. The way that they present the various sides of this conflict are done in a pretty realistic fashion which helps make things more engaging to watch unfold.  The harsh realities of the region that this film takes place in are shown well even if some of the scenes don’t work as well as one might expect.

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – This is Cyrus Nowrasteh’s second movie which deals with Iranian corruption and the problems within Iran. (From IMDB)

Rating – BAFTA Worthy (6/10)
