The Best of Men (2012)

“Did you think that you would make plans and life would follow them obediently?” – Dr. Ludwig Guttman

Number of Times Seen – 1 (5 Jan 2021)

Brief Synopsis – Based on the true story of a German physician who as a refugee during World War Two in England did so much for disabled soldiers.

My Take on it – This is a film that I came across by accident and was surprised at how god it was.

They are able to tell such an inspiring story here that stays so enjoyable to watch unfold.

The story is able to show how many difficulties both the medical professionals and the injured men faced by their ordeals.

Introducing rigorous muscle toning exercises and sport had such an effect on them all.

The fact that this story is based on real events adds so much to the impact of things.

Te film has a great largely unrecognizable cast led by Eddie Marsan who is able to play his character in a very quirky, yet profound way.

During the time that this story takes place, being paralyzed was seen as a death sentence to anyone and this story is able to show that feeling could be changed.

They find some great ways to keep things interesting and fun to watch as things play out here.

The film’s biggest problem is that they aren’t able to develop any of the injured men in a much deeper way because this might have helped make us care even more about the individual characters instead of the overall events and story line.

Bottom Line – Very inspirational story that works really well. The story is told in a great way that shows the various difficulties faced both by he injured men and the staff at the hospital. The cast is great and Marsan is able to play this doctor in such a quirky, yet profound way. The idea that paralysis wasn’t a death warrant for these men is shown really well and helps keep thing interesting the whole way through as we get to see how it all plays out.  They fail to develop each of the paralyzed men on a deeper level which would have made things even more powerful to observe. Recommended!

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – The title “The Best of Men” is a pun on Dr Guttmann’s surname which means “good man” in German. (From IMDB)

Rating – Globe Worthy (8/10)
