The Dissident (2020)

“In the last couple of months, every day, every night, just I’m waiting for bad news. ” – Omar Abdulaziz

Number of Times Seen – 1 (13 Jan 2021)

Brief Synopsis – Documentary that tries to uncover what happened to an outspoken journalist who disappeared after visiting an Embassy in Turkey.

My Take on it – This is a documentary that I came across by accident which has a very fascinating story.

They manage to tell this story really well and we get a clear idea of the way that events played out.

The story feels slightly too long and better editing could have made things even more powerful to watch.

The movie gives us some very interesting interviews with friends, colleagues and various politicians on the events of what happened along with how things reached such a fervor over the years.

Each of the people interviewed have ideas on how things can to be which helps make things more intriguing to watch as it all unfolds in the attempt to try and discover the real truth as to what happened.

The most important message of this film is that there are apparently certain regimes in the world who don’t fear anyone or repercussions for their own actions, but still have a very deep fear of what outspoken individuals who have a platform to have their voices heard might say.

This is shown in such a meaningful way and the hope is for that idea to eventually be changed by the progress of the world over the years.

Bottom Line – Intriguing idea that is told quite well despite the feel that things are dragged out a bit too much. The film gives us some very powerful interviews with friends, colleagues and politicians who all do their best to try and discover the truth of what really happened. This film shows how certain regimes have no fear of repercussions yet they still might fear what certain outspoken people may say. Recommended!

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – The film struggled to find a distributor for eight months and was not able to run on a large streaming platform like Netflix or Amazon Prime Video. It is widely believed this was due to those platforms fear of offending the Saudi Arabian government and possibly losing subscribers. (From Wikipedia)

Rating – Globe Worthy (7/10)
