“We’ve got a chance to be part of something truly great. Maybe we’ll look stupid to some, but life ain’t worth much if all you do is play it safe. It’s about bein’ out there, takin’ chances.” – Chip Wooley
Number of Times Seen – 1 (17 Jan 2021)
Brief Synopsis – Based on the true story of the journey of the owners of a crooked footed horse that ended up qualifying for the Kentucky Derby.
My Take on it – This is a film that I had high hopes for.
I have seen a few films in the same genre that were quite inspirational and expected this film to follow suite.
Unfortunately, they aren’t able to make things more powerful than the way that things are presented here.
Something constantly feels missing in the way tat they do things here that might have made the story and characters much more enjoyable to watch.
None of the characters are developed well enough and that hurts things because they feel far too stereotypical in the way they are shown which is even more surprising given the fact that they are based on real people
The dialogue is quite choppy and isn’t as powerful or inspirational as one might hope for in this kind of story.
It’s too hard to feel any kind of connection with the characters or what they are going through which is a shame.
The story itself is obviously very predictable, but it’s sill enjoyable to follow the journey that these character take on their way to the final race.
Bottom Line – Inspirational premise that just doesn’t work as well as one might hope. Similar premises have been realized much more effectively in past movies, and this one feels something missing that would help make things more enjoyable to watch. The characters aren’t developed well enough and despite being based on real people, they feel quite stereotypical in the way they are all shown. The dialogue is a bit too choppy and it’s hard to feel any kind of connection to the characters or to what they are going through. The story is obviously quite predictable, but the journey that the character need to take in order to get there is fun to watch even if it isn’t as inspirational as it could be.
MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – The jockey in the final race of the movie, Calvin Borel, was the actual jockey riding Mine That Bird in the 2009 Kentucky Derby. (From IMDB)
Rating – BAFTA Worthy (5/10)
