Pieces of A Woman (2020)

“And I’m ashamed of me. That I wasn’t a good enough mother to teach you how to stand up and speak for yourself, for God’s sakes. And to deal with this. Like my mother taught me.” – Elizabeth

Number of Times Seen – 1 (18 Jan 2021)

Brief Synopsis – Following a tragedy, a couple try to find a way back to a normal life.

My Take on it – This is a film that has been getting lots of hype lately and I decided to see what it was all about.

The first 30 minutes of the film are extremely gripping as we watch a loving couple deal with a home childbirth.

Having gone through a few childbirths alongside my wife, this was quite intense to watch and they do an amazing job making things so realistic the whole way through.

The film deals wit the way that different people deal with the same events in life and how they try to find solutions to their feelings from these events.

Te story is deliberately paced really slowly and that helps keep things even more engaging and gripping to watch unfold.

This helps establish and develop the various characters and their personalities and is done so well.

We get to feel the different kinds of pain that these characters experience along the way.

Love the way that this film gives us some very diverse opinions on the various issues which helps open up the debate to realms that one might never expect.

The film has a great cast and Vanessa Kirby truly stands out in the lead role.

Ellen Burstyn in also superb in a key supporting role as Kirby’s mother and has some very powerful scenes and dialogue.

The story is quite intense, yet they find a great way to present it all.

Bottom Line – Fascinating look at how people deal with tragedy in their own ways. The story is told in a deliberately slow way which works so well in helping establish the various characters.  This helps develop these characters in a very powerful way because we can feel their pain as the story unfolds. The film does a great job giving us some very diverse characters who allow for the debate to be expanded with varying viewpoints on the situation. The cast is great with Kirby doing a stellar job with this role.  Burstyn also stands out as her mother and has a few great scenes. Recommended!

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – The opening thirty minute birth scene took two days and six takes to shoot. (From IMDB)

Rating – Globe Worthy (8/10)
