Synchronic (2019)

“[quoting Einstein] People like us, who believe in physics, know that the distinction between the past, present and future is only a stubbornly persistent illusion.” – Steve

Number of Times Seen – 1 (18 Jan 2021)

Brief Synopsis – A paramedic tries to find the daughter of his best friend who has disappeared after taking a mysterious new drug.

My Take on it – This is a film that I came across by accident and was immediately taken in by the intriguing premise.

Unfortunately, this film isn’t able to present things in a more interesting way.

They give us such a great idea dealing with a drug that causes time travel yet it isn’t able to keep things enjoyable enough to watch.

The way that this story mixes sci-fi and thriller elements allows for so much more potential but they actually ruin things here because things don’t stay entertaining and thrilling enough.

The characters aren’t developed well enough and they all feel far too superficial in everything they say or do.

Anthony Mackie is a great actor, but he isn’t able to hold his own here in the lead role which makes it even harder to take what he does or says very seriously.

The film was made on such a low budget and the special effects just aren’t convincing enough to help make things more realistic.

This is obviously quite a shame because of the potential that they had here.

Bottom Line – Great premise that just isn’t presented well enough. The film gives us such a great idea about a drug that causes time travel. The mix between thriller and sci-fi has so much potential, but they ruin things here because it just isn’t interesting enough. The characters are far too superficial. Mackie is a great actor, but it’s hard to take his character seriously here.  The fact that this is a low budget film also hurts things because the special effects aren’t realistic enough which is quite a shame due to the potential that this premise had.

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – The name of Steve’s dog, Hawking, it’s a reference to the late English theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking given the fact that there is some information about quantum physics and time travel in the movie. (From IMDB)

Rating – Razzie Worthy (4/10)
