Born Into Brothels: Calcutta’s Red Light Kids (2004)

“There is nothing called hope in my future.” – Avjit

Number of Times Seen – 1 (19 Jan 2021)

Brief Synopsis – Documentary about the lives of children living in the slums of Calcutta India and how an encounter with a filmmaker changed their lives forever.

My Take on it – This is a film that I recall hearing about 16+ years ago when it was nominated for an Oscar for Best Documentary.

I never had much of a desire to see what it was all about at the time, but when I came across it recently, I decided to see what it was all about.

The film is quite intriguing in the way that it show us the lives of these forgotten children who live in the slums of Calcutta.

The way that these kids and film makers interact throughout the film is great to watch especially as we get to see how thing send up unfolding here.

The fact that the connection between them is all about photography also helps strengthen the connection between them.

As the story unfolds, we can clearly see how that helps make their reactions and connections feel even deeper and stronger along the way.

I have to admit that I’m not quite surprised that this kind of film could win the Oscar for Best Documentary especially given the fact that is presents things in a very humanitarian way that helps make things even more powerful to watch unfold.

The one thing that constantly came across my mind while watching this, was that I was so curious to know what eventually happened to all of these kids after 17 years and would love to see an update on their lives after this film.

Bottom Line – Interesting film that is able to give us such a profound look at the lives of these somewhat forgotten children. The interactions between these kids and the filmmakers is quite fascinating to watch as things unfold. It’s quite intriguing to see the the connection with pictures that they have in common because it adds so much to their connection as it becomes stronger as the film moves along.  I am not surprised that this film was able to win the Oscar for Best Documentary due to the way that it all progresses here. Recommended!
