Brief Synopsis – A down on his luck man strives for a better life in his small town.
My Take on it – Such a profound film that gives Paul Newman such a profound character to portray.
He plays things in such a realistic fashion that the sarcasm of his character is spot on throughout.
WE get to see how his character gets developed over the course of the film and his arc is quite poignant to watch as things progress.
Newman has superb chemistry with the rest of the cast and is comes across so well in the dialogue.
Bruce Willis, Dylan Walsh, Melanie Griffith, Jessica Tandy (in her final role), Pruitt Taylor Vince, Josef Sommer, Philip Bosco and Philip Seymour Hoffman all add so much to the story because their characters are so enjoyable and realistic to watch.
The characters are developed really well and they all seem like real people that we all could know and the small town atmosphere of the story helps make things work so much better.
This was Newman’s final Oscar nomination for Best Actor in his career and IMHO, it is one of his very best performances.
The musical score by Howard Shore is also great and enhances the story and characters so much.
Robert Benton does a superb job directing this film in such a way that things feel so poignant the whole way through.
This movie is based on a novel by Richard Russo and I would love to find a copy of the book to read because of the way that all of these characters are written since they help make us truly believe the events of their lives as being genuine.
Highly Highly Recommended!
MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Early in the film, the elderly character Mrs. Beryl (played by Jessica Tandy) says, “I think this may the year God finally lowers the boom on me.” The character’s words proved sadly to be prophetic. Jessica Tandy did in fact die before the theatrical release of the film. (From IMDB)
Rating – Oscar Worthy (10/10) (no change from original review)
