“[singing] I’m picking out a Thermos for you. Not an ordinary Thermos for you. But the extra best Thermos that you can buy, with vinyl and stripes and a cup built right in.” – Navin R. Johnson
Number of Times Seen – at least twice (Cable in the 80’s and 10 Feb 2021)
Brief Synopsis – A naive country boy travels to the big city and finds life very different than he expected.
My Take on it – Fun film that works so well due to the hilarious performance by Steve Martin.
The situations that this characters gets himself into over the course of the story are ridiculously funny and add so much to the way things play out.
The story itself is a bit bland and doesn’t stay very coherent along the way even if the end result is really funny.
The supporting cast is also great with Bernadette Peters, Carl Reiner (who also directed this movie), Mabel King, M. Emmet Walsh and Jackie Mason all adding so much to the fun of things.
The story feels like it’s a bunch of humorous skits put together with masking tape even if parts don’t really seem to fit well together, but ultimately, the end result is really funny to watch despite all of this.
The movie is quite quotable and is filled with great one-liners.
MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Stanley Kubrick was a big admirer of this film. He would often recite lines from the film to cast and crew on his films and he once invited Steve Martin over so they could play chess. (From IMDB)
Rating – Globe Worthy (7/10)
