Number of Times Seen – Twice (12 Jun 2009 and 1 Mar 2021)
Brief Synopsis – An American couple on a train that traverses Russia unexpectedly get involved in a murder, a drug deal and with deadly gangsters.
My Take on it – Really thrilling story that works due to the perceived innocent personalities of the two main characters.
Woody Harrelson and Emily Mortimer have great chemistry together and that helps make their relationship feel even more realistic as the story progresses.
The film’s plot does stumble upon some typical tropes of these kind of thrillers, yet still manages to find its own voice along the way that helps keep things suspenseful.
The various follies that these characters make along their journey helps make them feel even more endearing because they come across as being so likable.
The supporting cast is also great with Ben Kingsley, Kate Mara and Thomas Kretchmann helping keep the story from seeming too dull as things spiral out of control for these characters.
The setting is also great because it allows for things to be both unfamiliar to the characters and viewer which adds even more suspense to everything that transpires here.
The pacing is great and is helping by the effects of a speeding train that enhance things to a point that it all feels as if it is going at an uncontrollable speed which also adds to the tension.
MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – This movie had the misfortune of opening on the same weekend as The Dark Knight (2008). (From IMDB)
Rating – Globe Worthy (8/10)
