Coming to America (1988) – Encore Review 2

“Look… me and the McDonald’s people got this little misunderstanding. See, they’re McDonald’s… I’m McDowell’s. They got the Golden Arches, mine is the Golden Arcs. They got the Big Mac, I got the Big Mick. We both got two all-beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles and onions, but their buns have sesame seeds. My buns have no seeds.” – Cleo McDowell

Brief Synopsis – An African Prince travels to New York in order to try and find a bride.

My Take on it – Hilarious film that works on so many levels.

Eddie Murphy was able to create such an iconic role here that resonates so well even after more than 30 years.

The comedy of the story works well because of the fish out of water aspect of things that stays fascinating throughout.

This is the first of Murphy’s many films which utilizes him in numerous roles which has become his trademark.

I recall when this came out that aspect of the story was so fascinating to watch because of its freshness especially when there are characters that are obviously Murphy and others that are much more difficult t pick out at a glance.

The way that the story plays out is great and finds a way to stay fun the whole way through.

The message of the film is perfectly done and finds a great way to show the importance of real chemistry and interests when someone seeks a partner in life.

The film is filled with lots and lots of cameos that make things even more fun to try and catch.

Highly Recommended!
