Ajami (2009)

“A guy was murdered in Jaffe. The whole department worked 24 hours nonstop. I haven’t slept, because the kids drove me nuts. Bless their hearts.” – Dando Ben David

Number of Times Seen – Twice (5 Feb 2010 and 8 Mar 2021)

Brief Synopsis – Five interweaving stories of a community where various religions all live together; sometimes in harmony and sometimes not.

My Take on it – Intriguing idea that works quite well.

The various stories all come across as being quite unique and allow for the viewer to get a much richer idea of how life in this community revolves around these various characters.

The characters are each developed well and we get a clear idea as to what they each stand for as the story moves along.

The film is paced really well and is able to keep things so fascinating and engaging throughout.

This film was nominated for an Oscar for Best Foreign Language film even though it failed to win.

The best story is the one featuring Dando because we can see how frustrating life can be for a policeman trying to deal with his own personal tragedies, yet still doing his best to do his job properly.

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – The scene where the cops drive around and someone tries to sell them stolen red shoes, was not staged. They were actually shooting in the car and were interrupted by that man. As the actors used to be actual cops, they reacted like they would, and later the filmmakers decided to keep that scene. (From IMDB)

Rating – Globe Worthy (8/10)
