Boss Level (2020)

“I am Guan Yin, and Guan Yin has done this.” – Guan Yin

Number of Times Seen – 1 (8 Mar 2021)

Brief Synopsis – A former soldier is stuck in a time warp where he relives the same day over and over and must try and save his wife and son.

My Take on it – Great use of the time warp concept where a character relives the same day over and over.

Frank Grillo is perfectly cast in the lead role and makes us believe everything that he goes through over the course of the story.

The various ways that his character keeps dying throughout the film adds a nice level of fun to things because it gets quite inventive as things progress.

The film in some ways follows the pattern of a video game as the character keeps moving up as he must defeat more powerful enemies as the story moves along.

The supporting cast is also great with Naomi Watts Michelle Yeoh and Mel Gibson all adding thing to the way this all plays out.

The ability to give a character endless days in order to learn new fighting methods is done well here and that enhances the way that the story moves forward.

The twists and turns in the story help keep things so enjoyable to watch as things keep surprising along the way.

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Joe Carnahan had been trying to make this movie for years. It was originally called “Continue” and was written by Chris Borey and Eddie Borey in 2010. Carnahan rewrote the script and announced in 2012 that he would direct it for 20th Century Fox. He later filmed screen tests with Frank Grillo. Fox ultimately decided not to move forward with it, reportedly disagreeing with Carnahan’s choice to cast Grillo as the star. Carnahan later posted the screen tests on Twitter. (From IMDB)

Rating – Globe Worthy (7/10)
