“Well sir. What we have before us is a real dilemma. You gonna fly your last mission with a green gunner or the jinxed one?” – Jonathan
Number of Times Seen – at least 4 times (TV in 1985, cable in the 90’s, video and 17 Mar 2021)
Brief Synopsis – During a bombing mission over Germany in World War II, a belly gunner is trapped in his ball turret following a freak accident and must find a way to survive without being crushed during landing.
My Take on it – Great example as to why this was such a fun and intriguing show to watch during the 80’s.
The show was produced by Steven Spielberg and this was actually one of the few episodes that he also directed.
The story itslelf is told quite well and the performances help enhance things even more.
The cats includes Kevin Costner, Casey Siemaszko and Kiefer Sutherland who are all great here.
The story deals with the way that out=r imagination can sometimes save us from situations that seem impossible.
The dialogue between the characters is quite poignant and allows us to get a perspective on how each of them look at the predicament that they’ve found themselves in.
Even after 35 years, this story still remains fresh in my mind because it is such a powerful and enjoyable way to mix together a war story with fantasy elements in such an effective and engaging way.
Recommended!
MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – This was the very first “stereo surround sound” broadcast by NBC. While many homes were not equipped with the surround decoder to play it back with the required rear channel speakers, manufacturers such as Fisher came out with rear channel amp/decoders to complete the rear sound effects. (From IMDB)
Rating – Globe Worthy (8/10)
