Pinocchio (2019)

“I’ve been thinking to make with my hands, by myself, a wooden puppet.” – Geppetto

Number of Times Seen – 1 (21 Mar 2021)

Brief Synopsis – A woodcarver creates a wooden boy that miraculous comes to life, but his desire to become a real boy takes him on many adventures.

My Take on it – This is a film that I recall hearing about a few months back and the cast of Roberto Benigni in the role of Geppetto made me quite curious.

Like most people, I knew the story of from originally seeing the Disney version lots of times as a kid.

This is an even better version of the story IMHO because they don’t saturate any of it for kids.

The original fable is quite dark and this adaptation is done so well in order for us to really get a deep understanding of the dangers that this character ends up facing along the way.

This film was nominated for two Oscars – Best Costume Design and Best Makeup and Hairstyle and there is no doubt in my mind that they are both two very deserving nominations.

Whether they will eventually win, I have my doubts but as they say, ‘It’s an honor just being nominated’

The film also has a great runtime of just over two hours and allows us to explore so many of the adventures of this character.

The way that the story mixed together reality with fairy tale works really well and makes things feel so poignant as things move along.

So glad, I got a chance to see this one!

Highly Recommended!

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – After several adaptations that had made the story family-friendly, director Matteo Garrone wanted this movie to go back to the grim atmosphere and satirical tone of Carlo Collodi’s original novel, complete with depictions of cruelty and extreme poverty. Garrone said that much of the criticisms of the film’s violent content came from adults, while children in the test audience were quite relaxed about that aspect. (From IMDB)

Rating – Oscar Worthy (9/10)
