Kid 90 (2021)

“I think it’s fascinating to be able to go back and have a true chronological blueprint of what it was like to grow up as a teenager in the 90’s. And part of me believes that somewhere inside, that teenage girl knew that she was gonna have a story to tell, knew that she was gonna go on an adventure and she was gonna document every fucking second of it so that she could share it someday.” – Soleil Moon Frye

Number of Times Seen – 1 (23 Mar 2021)

Brief Synopsis – Documentary by a former kid star of TV during the 90’s and how it affected her life and the life of her fellow teen idols at the time.

My Take on it –As a kid of the 80’s, I was very familiar with TV shows and movies of that era along with many of the teen idols that had their lives shot to stardom so quickly.

Unfortunately, many people at the time didn’t even think about how this stardom would affect these kids years or even decades later.

This is a film put together by former child star Soleil Moon Frye (Punky Brewster) and it’s really eye opening to watch.

Great documentary that really gives us a very intimate view of the way of life for these kind of kids at the time.

The home video footage and anecdotes by former teen stars who tell their stories are so fascinating to watch.

The film itself is able to hone in on many of the issues of teen stardom and how the combination of fame, fortune, life without parents or guardians and accessibility of dangerous substances can really take its toll on these kids.

This movie helps give the viewer a much better understanding as to what they went through and how some of them are still coping with the ripple effects decades later.

Recommended!

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Soleil Moon Frye spent four years going through footage she had shot, diaries, and voicemails, from when she was a teenager in the 1990s. Initially planning to make the film not about herself, she began reaching out to friends from that period regardless if she had remained friends or drifted apart from them. (From IMDB)

Rating – Globe Worthy (8/10)
