Genre Guesstimation – Love and Monsters (2020)

The idea behind this feature (Genre Guesstimation) is for me to watch a bunch of new movies (or ones that I haven’t seen many times) from the chosen monthly GG genre in order to expand my knowledge of movies within that particular genre.

This month’s genre has been chosen by Rebecca of Almost Ginger and we will be reviewing our favorite Travel Film.

Please get me your submissions by the 25th of Apr by sending them to

Try to think out of the box! Great choice Rebecca!

Let’s see if I felt that this movie would be worthy of being in the company of my others favorite movies in the genre of Travel Film……

“Good instincts are earned by making mistakes. ” – Clyde

Number of Times Seen – 1 (7 Apr 2021)

Brief Synopsis – In a post apocalyptic world, a man decides to leave his shelter in order to reunite with his ex-girlfriend across the state, but to get there, he needs to avoid all of the monsters along the way.

My Take on it – This is a film that I somehow missed when it was released earlier in the year.

The fact that it was nominated for an Oscar for Best Visual Effects drew me to it without any real idea as to what it was about.

The story is told in such a grat way and stays so engaging throughout.

The main character is really lovable and allows us to care so much about him as he undertakes this very dangerous and perilous journey.

The effects are superb here and the monsters that he encounters along the way are quite realistic looking which easily explains why this film was nominated for an Oscar for them.

The story plays out in such a nice way because things stay so engaging and entertaining the whole way through.

The mix of technology with a world devoid of it also works well because it still seems futuristic in the way it all moves along.

The concept as presented here is done quite well and I’m curious to watch this film again in the future to get an even deeper understanding of everything that transpires here.

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – When Joel meets a Mavis Robot, she plays the song “Stand By Me” for him. Shortly thereafter, Joel falls into a creek and gets covered in leeches, in a similar way that Gordy does in the movie “Stand By Me”. (From IMDB)

Genre Grandeur Worthy? – Comes really close. Such a fun and innovative film that works on so many different levels.

Rating – Globe Worthy (8/10)
