“Now if you boys don’t remember anything else I say, remember this: It’s not what you are, but what people think you are. And with the right amount of money, you can make ’em think whatever you want.” – Joe Kennedy Sr.
Number of Times Seen – Twice (27 Apr 2011 and 11 Apr 2021)
Brief Synopsis – Miniseries that chronicles the rise to power of the Kennedy political dynasty from the 1940’s through the 1960’s.
My Take on it – Really fascinating film that works so well in capturing the way that the Kennedy Family worked.
The film’s main focus towards the beginning is with Joe Kennedy, played expertly by Tom Wilkinson.
He is able to play this character in such a spectacular way because we can see how much he is willing to do for his family to gain power.
His manipulations are done in subtle, yet effective ways which makes it great to see.
Greg Kinnear and Barry Pepper are also both superb here as Jack and Bobby respectively.
We get to watch powerful performances by these actors as they show how each of their different personalities helped them become such a powerful team when they would work together.
In addition to showing just the governmental politics of these men, they also allow us to see the familial politics which to them was just as important, if not more so.
The film never tries to sugar coat any of the actions of the characters and that actually makes things even more intriguing to watch since we get to see how human these seemingly inhuman men actually were.
MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – The TV miniseries was originally produced by the History Channel, only to be ultimately shelved due to unsuitability issues, further compounded by the Kennedy family’s apparent dissatisfaction with the series. Eventually the mini-series was picked up by the Albuquerque-based ReelzChannel whose on-air personalities include movie aficionados Leonard Maltin and Richard Roeper. (From IMDB)
Rating – Oscar Worthy (9/10)
