One of Us (2017)

“I was invisible.” – Etty

Number of Times Seen – 1 (11 Apr 2021)

Brief Synopsis – Documentary about three former Hassidic Jews who left the sect and are trying to find a place in the world.

My Take on it – Very intriguing documentary that is quite insightful in the way that it depicts these characters.

The film is able to show that not everyone is comfortable with the way they were brought u and might need to find a way to escape that kind of life.

The story specifically deals with people in the Hassidic world, but many of the stories and anecdotes about the problems that they have could be focused on in many other ways of life.

This film does a nice job showing that the way of life within the Hassidic word isn’t for everyone and the kind of lifestyle that they live is an all or nothing one which makes it problematic to remain in the fold when you have reasons to stray or walk away.

The story is quite intense and allows us to learn so much about these characters and both their new and old lifestyles while they feel trapped in a kind of limbo between these two ways of life.

I really liked the way that they chose three very different people to tell their stories because it adds so much to the story and the complex situations that these people have to deal with in their lives.
