The Last Blockbuster (2020)

“Video stores and movie theaters have always kind of felt like my church. They always felt like the place where I go to feel the most, like, the calm, the normal human being that I’ve always wanted to be, but I’m too weird to ever get there. But I walk into the video store and I’m like, “Oh. This is where I’m normal.”” – Jared Rasic

Number of Times Seen – 1 (9 May 2021)

Brief Synopsis – Documentary about the very last Blockbuster video store in the entire world.

My Take on it – As a kid of the 80’s, and as a movie lover, I grew up going to the video store to find new and excited movies to watch and add to my repertoire.

I would spend hours walking up and down the isles seeking out films I had never heard of before hoping to find gems.

I would also spend lots of time taking to the employees of the stores in order to get recommendations from them.

This film brought back all of those memories for me.

The film is able to capture the look and feel of those days gone by when many of us would rely on going to the video store to rent a video (and subsequently a DVD).

The interviews with numerous celebrities who also reflect on their memories of the video store are great and they all feel so personal.

Love the way that this film chronicles the rise and fall of the video store and is able to debunk the myths as to the causes of the demise.

The movie is also able to give us insight as to the how an d why this final store still has remained open despite thousands of others closing down over the past two decades.

The stories that many of those interviewed tell, are personal, yet resonate so well for all movie lovers, especially from the generations that experienced the boom of the video market.

This is also quite insightful about the role the media has played in trying to help keep this final store in business throughout the past few years.

Highly Recommended!
