Breathless (1983)

“You’ve heard of Frank Lloyd Wright? This is Frank Lloyd Wrong. ” – Paul

Number of Times Seen – 1 (10 May 2021)

Brief Synopsis – A drifter steals a car in Las Vegas and by the tie he reaches L.A., he’s gotten way over his head.

My Take on it – Horrendous remake that doesn’t work nearly as well as the original.

Richard Gere is completely miscast in the lead role and fails to make the viewer care about anything he says or does along the way.

They use much of the story from the original film, yet adapt it all to a US setting and having the lead be American with a French girlfriend which was the complete opposite of what the original did and it never feels convincing enough.

The plot moves along in a strange way and doesn’t let the viewer really sink in who these characters are meant to be.

The characters all come across as being quite superficial and that makes it even more difficult to really care about them.

The pacing is also done quite poorly and there are far too many scenes that seem quite out of place within the context of this film’s story.

The choice to retain the 60’s as the period of this story is also somewhat problematic since it doesn’t seem conducive enough to this kind of story.

The film deal with the cultural revolution of the 60’s and tries to give the viewer an idea of what it must have been like, but tat too fails to hit its mark.

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Quentin Tarantino has said that this is one of the “coolest” movies, stating: “Here’s a movie that indulges completely all my obsessions, comic books, rockabilly music and movies.” (From IMDB)

Rating – Razzie Worthy (3/10)
