Billy Crystal: 700 Sundays (2014)

“There’s only two things I wanted to be; a standup comic or a New York Yankee or a really funny New York Yankee.” – Billy Crystal

Number of Times Seen – Twice (20 Apr 2014 and 23 May 2021)

Brief Synopsis – One man show by Billy Crystal about his life growing up in New York during the 1950’s.

My Take on it – Amazing one man show that really gives the viewer a very personal view of how Billy Crystal grew up.

The way that he describes so many of the events of his childhood in such descriptive detail is so fascinating to watch.

Crystal is able to weave together some very somber moments with hilarious ones and this helps make this film so effective to watch.

I would have loved to have had the opportunity to watch this play on the stage, but being able to see it filmed is almost as effective.

Crystal stage presence is amazing to watch and shows how talented he is that he is able to stay so engaging and entertaining to watch for two hours straight.

The story of loss, hope and following your dreams is shown quite effectively here because it isn’t just Crystal’s story being told but also that of his parents, grandparents and other relatives who help make the viewer feel as if this isn’t a one man show, but rather a view of an entire family s their lives progressed in a different time and place.

Not many performers could do what Crystal does here and that helps make this so poignant and personal to watch due to the way it all is played out here.

Highly Highly Recommended!

  1. I agree that 700 Sundays is a wonderful performance, Rob.
We had the good fortune to see it when Billy Crystal toured the production and it was a superb night in the theatre.
