The 1st Annual Bing and Bob Blogathon – Robin and the 7 Hoods (1964)

This is part of The 1st Annual Bing and Bob Blogathon taking place this week and being hosted by Kristen of KN Winiarski Writes

Tnx for letting me partake Kristen!

“When your opponent’s sittin’ there holding all aces, there’s only one thing left to do: Kick over the table. ” – Little John

Number of Times Seen – 1 (25 May 2021)

Brief Synopsis – After a crime boss is murdered, one of his faithful deputies tries to stop a more ruthless deputy from taking over the crime system in Chicago.

My Take on it –This is a film that I recall hearing about years ago, yet never got around to watching it.

The fact that I saw that Bing Crosby stars in it helped give me the extra push to watch it for this blogathon.

Really fun film that is able to take the overall premise of Robin Hood and transfer it to a gangster story of the 1930’s.

The cast is headlined by Frank Sinatra and he gets his usual gang of Rat Packers to help him make this story more successful.

Bing Crosby joins Sammy Davis Jr. and Dean Martin as a sidekick and helps raise the level of intelligence of these cohorts due to the way that Crosby plays the character of Alan A-Dale.

It’s quite fascinating seeing how they are able to use many aspects of the Robin Hood myth and adapt it to a more modern setting.

The film has a few nice musical interludes along the way that also add to the fun of it all.

Loved seeing Peter Falk as a ruthless gangster here and he comes across feeling quite realistic in this part.

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – On the same day as the funeral scene was filmed, President John F. Kennedy (a personal friend of Frank Sinatra’s) was assassinated. (From IMDB)

Rating – Globe Worthy (7/10)

  1. I just love this film! It is such a “fun” watch. I could watch this over and over. I agree, Peter Falk is just awesome in this movie. Dean, Frank, and Bing just wonderful together. The musical numbers are a blast, too. I cannot hear “My Kind of Town” without picturing Frank on the steps of the courthouse.
