Valentine’s Day (2010)

“When you love someone, you love all of them… you gotta love everything about them, not just the good things but the bad things too. The things that you find lovable and the things you don’t.” – Estelle

Number of Times Seen – Twice (13 Oct 2010 and 25 May 2021)

Brief Synopsis – Various character’s lives are intertwined as they each try to find the best way to spend the day of valentine’s Day with their loved one.

My Take on it – Great idea that just doesn’t work as well as one might hope.

The idea to create a story like this only works well enough if they also spend the time developing the characters on a deeper level.

This film has an amazing cast, but none of the characters feel like anything more than a caricature or a typical film trope throughout.

They take on a bit too many stories here and despite it being fun watching all of these known actors in small parts, it jumps around too much between the stories to be more effective.

The cast includes: Julia Roberts, Ashton Kutcher, Shirley MacLaine, Jamie Foxx, Jessica Alba, Anne Hathaway, Topher Grace, Jessica Biel, Bradley Cooper, Patrick Dempsey, Hector Elizondo, Jennifer Garner and Queen Latifah.

Garry Marshall does a nice job directing what feels like list of vignettes instead of a full length film.

This is the danger of films like this because they try too hard to give us an all star ensemble cast, but in the end there just isn’t enough meat in the story for any of them to shine.

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Julia Roberts was paid $11,952 for each word she says in this film: 251 words in return for, reportedly, a $3 million paycheck. (From IMDB)

Rating – BAFTA Worthy (5/10)
