Number of Times Seen – Twice (12 Apr 2008 and 7 Jun 2021)
Brief Synopsis – A thief is hired with his team to rob the safety deposit boxes of a bank that contain some very powerful politically motivated documents and pictures that are wanted by the mob and by the government.
My Take on it – Such a fun heist movie that works so well and is able to stay enjoyable from start to finish.
The pacing is done superbly and that helps raise the suspense level throughout.
The fact that this is based on a real heist n 1971 also adds so much to things because of the way that it was a pivotal moments in history.
Love the fact that many of the various shady characters in the film all use the same bank safety deposit boxes based on recommendations from their “friends” which caused so many scandalous facts to eventually come out after the heist.
These facts ranged from politicians extracurricular activities to ledgers with names of bribed or “bought” officials.
Jason Statham is superb in this film and plays the lead robber in a very clever and brilliant fashion.
The story unfolds really well and does a wonderful job keeping things engaging and entertaining the whole way through.
MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Roger Donaldson said one of the most difficult days of filming was when he filmed the brothel scene. The scene called for the women to be walking around wearing only garters. However, Donaldson said that when he went to film the scene he discovered that most of the women shaved their genitals, which would have been anachronistic for 1971. So the actresses had to wear pubic wigs called “merkins.” This caused a problem because the merkins were hard to secure in place and kept slipping, causing Donaldson much aggravation. (From IMDB)
Rating –Globe Worthy (8/10)
