Genre Guesstimation – Meatballs (1979) – Encore Review

The idea behind this feature (Genre Guesstimation) is for me to watch a bunch of new movies (or ones that I haven’t seen many times) from the chosen monthly GG genre in order to expand my knowledge of movies within that particular genre.

This month’s genre has been chosen by Joe of The MN Movie Man and we will be reviewing our favorite Summer Camp Movies.

Please get me your submissions by the 25th of Jun by sending them to

Try to think out of the box! Great choice Joe!

Let’s see if I felt that this movie would be worthy of being in the company of my others favorite movies in the genre of Summer Camp Movies……

“Attention. Here’s an update on tonight’s dinner. It was veal. I repeat, veal. The winner of tonight’s mystery meat contest is Jeffrey Corbin who guessed “some kind of beef.” ” – Tripper

Number of Times Seen – at least 10 times (cable, DVD, 6 May 2015 and 14 Jun 2021)

Brief Synopsis – Camper and counselors at a summer camp do all they can to try and make this summer the most memorable one possible.

My Take on it – Very fun Summer camp movie that has become one of the most iconic ones in the genre.

Bill Murray does a great job in the lead role here despite the fact that he feels far too old for this kind of role.

His connection with the campers helps keep things enjoyable and allows for the story to move along at a great pace.

His charming and funny personality is a breath of fresh air here and helps move the story along throughout.

The antics that Murray and the various other characters play here is great and stays quite entertaining due to the way it all unfolds.

The music is superb and I have always loved the films theme song.

The story is told in a very nostalgic way that shows how summer camp can be so enjoyable in the late 70’s/early 80’s.

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – According to one of the featurettes on the DVD, several of the shots in the movie were added after initial filming ended. These included the scenes of Rudy and Tripper at the bus station and of them playing blackjack for peanuts. During the time off, Chris Makepeace had entered puberty and had the beginnings of a mustache. Bill Murray decided that it had to go so he took Makepeace over to a sink, lathered him up with soap and shaved off his mustache. So Makepeace received his first ever shave from Murray. (From IMDB)

Genre Grandeur Worthy? – Fun summer camp movie that is among the very best, even if it doesn’t age well enough.

Rating – Globe Worthy (8/10) (downgrade from original review)
