“Highly creative people have a hard time getting their movies made. Full stop. That’s all it is. Because they bring stuff that blows everyone away, and as much as the claim is they want something original, they’re terrified of it. That’s what happens. So, you don’t see those movies because they scare everybody up the chain of command.” – Sylvain Despretz

Brief Synopsis – Documentary that tries to put the pieces together as to the how and why a blockbuster superhero film during the 90’s was never made.
My Take on it – Such a fascinating documentary that allows the viewer to get an inside look at the amount of effort and strife needed in order to try and get a film made in Hollywood.
This is a very comprehensive documentary that has some amazing interviews with many of the key player who tries to get this film made in the mid- 1990’s including Tim Burton, Kevin Smith and Colleen Atwood.
The anecdotes described here are quite intriguing to listen to since many of the various “talking heads” actually contradict one another as they tell this story.
Some of the concepts described here are quite innovative and unique while other just don’t work at all.
The fact that they attempted to make this film before special effects technology was improved like it is today, is also great to see because the various crew members discuss the various techniques that they planned to use to make the story work on screen.
Kevin Smith is perfect here and is the voice of reason in his depiction of why there were so many problems with the system wile they tried to make this potential blockbuster film.
After watching this film, I am even sadder that this vision was never made because it sounds like a great story.

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Kevin Smith directed some episodes of the second season of Supergirl (2015), the first titled “Supergirl Lives” as a reference to the film. Smith joked he expected Supergirl to fight a giant spider as in the infamous battle scene proposed for this film. (From IMDB)
Rating – Globe Worthy (8/10)

I have seen this documentary a few years ago and I enjoyed it as it’s one of those stories about great films that never got made such as Alejandro Jodorowsky’s version of Dune or Orson Welles’ many attempts at Don Quixote. I have read a draft of Dan Gilroy’s script and it had a lot of amazing ideas and it looked like it was coming together before Warner Brothers pulled the plug.
