“Are you guys familiar with the cliché, ‘It’s a cliché because it’s true’? Well, that cliché about clichés being true has never more true than right now with the cliché, ‘The house always wins.” – Frank
Number of Times Seen – 1 (5 Jul 2021)
Brief Synopsis – In order to raise money for their daughter’s college fund, a couple start an underground casino which gets out of hand quite quickly.
My Take on it – This is a film that has so much more potential than is realized here.
Will Ferrell and Amy Poehler are both great actors and are usually able to keep things so funny, but their work in this film just doesn’t manage to come across better.
The story itself has so much going for it, but they never find the right tone or structure to keep it more enjoyable.
The characters are created in a very over the top fashion and it makes it so much harder to really root for them because of the way that things play out.
There are some fun scenes that helps keep things enjoyable, but overall it just doesn’t work well enough to stay engaging as a story.
The supporting cast also lend a hand in some fun aspects of the story, but still aren’t able to help make things more enjoyable to watch.
MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Mariah Carey was scheduled to film a cameo but her scenes were never filmed. Will Ferrell recalled that she showed up four hours late, then didn’t want to do the scene she had agreed to do. She then delayed production by not wanting to sing the song (one of her own) that she was supposed to sing. This would have required the legal department to clear the song. Carey also required her trailer to be filled with white flowers and stuffed lambs. Carey’s scene was ultimately not filmed. (From IMDB)
Rating – Razzie Worthy (4/10)
