Clean and Sober (1988)

“The best way to break old habits is to make new ones. ” – Craig

Number of Times Seen – At least twice (Cable in the 80’s and 6 Jul 2021)

Brief Synopsis – A self destructive alcoholic checks himself into a rehab center after the law begins to seek him out following an accidental overdose of an acquaintance.

My Take on it – This is a film that I recall seeing as a kid on cable and didn’t remeber ,uch about it besides the wodnerful performnace of Michael Keaton.

This is a movie that proved how great an actor Keaton can be because up until this point, he was mostly cast in comedic roles.

This performance is a complete 180 degree turn from that and he really hits it out of the park here.

His character comes across as being quite convincing in all that he says or does along the way.

The film’s supporting cast is also great with Kathy Baker and Morgan Freeman as part of his new support system within the rehab place.

The film gives a very realistic look at the life of addicts and tries to explain why it is so difficult to try and help people in these situations because it is so simple for them to always revert to their old ways.

The story plays out really well and is very powerful in the way it presents this kind of situation.

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – After seeing an early screening of the film, Jon Peters was inspired to cast Michael Keaton as Bruce Wayne (Batman) in Batman (1989). (From IMDB)

Rating – Globe Worthy (8/10)
