Genre Guesstimation – First Cow (2019)

The idea behind this feature (Genre Guesstimation) is for me to watch a bunch of new movies (or ones that I haven’t seen many times) from the chosen monthly GG genre in order to expand my knowledge of movies within that particular genre.

This month’s genre has been chosen by Joel Watches Movies and we will be reviewing our favorite Movies of the Outdoors (any movie set primarily outside and where nature figures significantly into their plot or themes.)

Please get me your submissions by the 25th of Jul by sending them to outdoorjoel@movierob.net

Try to think out of the box! Great choice Joel!

Let’s see if I felt that this movie would be worthy of being in the company of my others favorite movies in the genre of Movies of the Outdoors ……

“History isn’t here yet. It’s coming, but we got here early this time. Maybe this time, we can be ready for it. We can take it on our own terms.” – King-Lu

Number of Times Seen – 1 (11 Jul 2021)

Brief Synopsis – Two loners in the Old West, begin stealing milk from the only cow in the area in order to make tasty food to sell to the local population.

My Take on it – I decided that in order to make my guest choices of the Genre for the Genre Grandeur series more personal (and expand my own personal horizons of these genres), I will take a recommendation from my guest for a film to watch for this Genre Guesstimation series.

This movie was Joel’s choice for me to watch.

This is a movie that I’ve been intrigued to watch ever since I first heard about it, yet never had the opportunity until now to check it out due to Joel suggesting that I take a look at it.

The story is told quite well and they manage to give a seemingly unique look at like in the Old West

The two main characters forged a very unlikely friendship which develops even more as the story moves along and the realize how much hey truly have in common.

The scheme that they put forth works and they gain much more fame in their little town than they would have expected.

The story unfortunately drags a bit too much at certain points and if they had edited it a bit tighter it might have worked even better.

The characters are depicted in a very endearing way that helps keep things so engaging throughout.

Recommended!

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – A clafoutis is a French dessert consisting of a layer of fruit (traditionally black cherries) covered in batter, baked, dusted with powdered sugar and sometimes served with cream. (From IMDB)

Genre Grandeur Worthy? – Not quite. It is unique in its storytelling and that helps, but parts of the story drag along a bit too much.

Rating – Globe Worthy (7/10)
