“My daddy used to say, you wanna catch a killer, you go to the funeral. Look for anyone there who shouldn’t be, that’s your man. Nobody here today though, except Jonas. Hey Jonas, you kill this guy? ” – Chief Moore
Number of Times Seen – 1 (27 Jul 2021)
Brief Synopsis – After killing a traveling priest, a drifter takes his place and becomes the minister in a small tow, but the local sheriff begins to suspect something isn’t right.
My Take on it – This is a film that I had never heard of before coming across it in my quest to watch more films starring Michael Shannon.
The story plays out in a typical way and like many other similar themed stories, just doesn’t feel innovative or original enough in all that it does.
None of the characters are developed on more than a superficial level and it’s quite difficult to care about any of them along the way.
Shea Whigham is fine in the lead role, but fails to really bring anything more powerful to his character.
Michael Shannon plays the local sheriff who has his own issues, yet still does all he can to try and keep law and order in his town.
When he discovers that a crime has been committed, he does his best to try and solve the crime whatever the cost.
The dialogue in the film is fine, but there are a few exchanges between some of these characters that actually elevate the story to a higher level.
Unfortunately, it doesn’t happen more often along the way because that would have made things even more enjoyable to watch unfold.
MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Stars Shea Wigham and Michael Shannon, both of whom starred in the series Boardwalk Empire and Waco and the movie Take Shelter (2011). (From IMDB)
Rating – BAFTA Worthy (5/10)
