Genre Guesstimation – Kids (1995)

The idea behind this feature (Genre Guesstimation) is for me to watch a bunch of new movies (or ones that I haven’t seen many times) from the chosen monthly GG genre in order to expand my knowledge of movies within that particular genre.

This month’s genre has been chosen by Jess Manzo of French Toast Sunday and we will be reviewing our favorite Movies that take place over a 24 Hour Time Frame (Not including time loop movies).

Please get me your submissions by the 25th of Aug by sending them to

Try to think out of the box! Great choice Jess!

Let’s see if I felt that this movie would be worthy of being in the company of my others favorite movies in the genre of Movies that take place over a 24 Hour Time Frame (Not including time loop movies). ……

“Don’t you know tricks are for kids? ” – Club Kid

Number of Times Seen – 1 (4 Aug 2021)

Brief Synopsis – A group of kids spend the day just hanging out in New York.

My Take on it – This is a film that I head about yet never had any real inclination to see it until my research showed that it fits right into this month’s genre perfectly.

The story is told in a seemingly powerful way, but the characters all feel far too superficial which makes it so much harder to care about anything they say or do along the way.

The cast is superb with Rosario Dawson and Chloe Sevigny really shining here, but even they can’t help make their characters feel more sympathetic.

The unscripted feel of the story hurts things a lot because there is very little rhyme or reason to many of the scenes because of the way that these characters talk in an over the top fashion due to the choice to take things to the extreme.

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – The film received an NC-17 rating from the MPAA (no one under 18 admitted). Clark appealed the rating, and lost. The MPAA recommend that Clark not cut the film because they felt it would lose some of its impact.(From IMDB)

Genre Grandeur Worthy? – Not even close.

Rating –Razzie Worthy (3/10)

  1. I saw this movie when I was pretty young (like 12?) and it left quite an impression on me. I do appreciate how raw it is – the actors feel like they are actually the age they are portraying. It was definitely the creation of a lot of inexperienced people- Clark (in directing), Korine, and the cast – so some of the weaker screenplay and acting issues don’t bother me too much. It came off more authentic to me because of that. Definitely fair if it’s not your speed though! Clark & Korine both have been divisive throughout their careers.
