Bend it Like Beckham (2002)

This a Covid-19 2021 minireview!

“Lesbian? Her birthday’s in March. I thought she was a Pisces.” – Wedding Guest

Number of Times Seen – Twice (31 Jan 2005 and 19 Aug 2021)

Brief Synopsis – Two girls living in London try to fulfill their wises of playing soccer despite their parents’ objections

Bottom Line – Fun film that despite having a premise that has been overused, still finds a way to stay fresh and innovative. They do a nice job of creating familial conflicts for the characters which is both poignant and funny at the same time due to some of the misconceptions along the way. Parminder Nagra is superb in the lead role and this was her breakout role long before she became a staple on ER just a year later.  They deal with racial and LBGT issues in some nice ways that are not just there for laughs as is often the case in these kind of movies.

Recommended!

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Parminder Nagra was worried that the scar on her leg would prevent her from getting the role of Jess. Instead, the scar, and the story behind it, were worked into the script. (From IMDB)

Rating – Globe Worthy (7/10)
