No True Scotsman Blogathon – The Eagle (2011)

This is part of the The No True Scotsman Blogathon which took place in September (sorry for my tardiness) and was hosted by Gill of Realweegiemidget Reviews

Tnx for letting me partake Gill!

“[about Esca to Placidus and other elevated Romans] He’s not a slave. And he knows more about honor and freedom than you ever will. ” – Marcus Aquila

Number of Times Seen – 1 (5 Sep 2021)

Brief Synopsis – A Roman soldier stationed in England tries to regain the honor of his father by going into enemy territory with his Scottish slave in order to retrieving a Roman symbol that was stolen.

My Take on it – This is another film that I knew nothing about before coming across it in my research for this blogathon.

Channing Tatum and Jamie Bell are both great actors and that helps make this story even more enjoyable to watch.

The film deals with the themes of honor; both on a personal and national level, friendship and above all else loyalty.

The way that these two very different characters bond over the course of the film is great.

The chemisitry between them helps because they don’t always act as slave and slave owner.

This blogathon is all about non-Scottish actors playing Scottish characters and Bell is the one who actually (IMHO) dos a fair job convincingly playing a Scot.

The film gives the audience a better understanding of the Roman Empire during that time and how certain aspects of life were so very important to them that they wished to conquer the rest of the world for their own sake.

The conflict in ideology here is shown really well and that adds a whole other layer to the story.

Recommended!

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – The statue that Marcus glances at at the fort before the first Celt attack is a bust of Antoninus Pius, who was emperor of Rome at the time this film is set, AD 140. His reign is considered one of the calmest in Rome’s history. (From IMDB)

Rating – Globe Worthy (7/10)
