The Watcher (2000)

“Well, damned if you haven’t found the worst restaurant in the whole goddamn city.” – Lt. Hollis

Number of Times Seen – Twice (21 Jul 2001 and 22 Sep 2021)

Brief Synopsis – A serial killer stalks and taunts an FBI agent assigned to catch him.

My Take on it – Terrible thriller that makes so little sense.

Both James Spader and Keanu Reeves are great actors, but neither is very memorable in their roles in this film.

The story plays out in a very predictable way which hurts things too much since there are very few surprises along the way.

The plot tries to bring forth a Hannibal Lecter-Clarise Starling kind of vibe between the two characters, but fails horrendously because it never reaches a level where one really can care about the characters.

As a thriller, this movie doesn’t manage to stay engaging enough along the way.

Even the scenes where The two leads interact feel a bit too forced and that takes away a lot also from making this more enjoyable to watch.

The supporting cast is also great with Marisa Tomei and Ernie Hudson, but even they can’t help make things more enjoyable or thrilling tio watch unfold here.

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Reeves has stated that he was not interested in the script but was forced into doing the film when his assistant Brian forged his signature on a contract. He performed the role rather than get involved in a lengthy legal battle. He was contractually prevented from disclosing this until 12 months after the film’s US release. (From IMDB)

Rating – Razzie Worthy (4/10)
