Dune (2021)

“Dreams make good stories, but everything important happens when we’re awake.” – Duncan Idaho

Number of Times Seen – 1 (21 Oct 2021)

Brief Synopsis – Epic story of a young boy who is heir to the guardianship of one of the most precious commodities in the galaxy.

My Take on it – This is a film that has been anticipated for quite some time especially since COVID pushed off its release date by nearly a year.

I must admit that I never read the novel that this was based on but have seen both film adaptations made prior to this one.

The story is told in a deliberately slow paced way and that helps keep an epic feel for the way things play out.

The special effects are beautifully added to the film which make it all flow so well.

The cinematography tho is the best part of this film because they manage to give us some great aerial shots of the various locations in the film which add so much to the epic scope of it all.

The most frustrating part of this film is that it feels incomplete because the story ends midway through the story told in the previous versions of this story.

I subsequently found out that should this film be a success, there are plans to make a sequel.

That’s actually a strange concept because usually films that are trying to get the epic scope and breadth of it all.

The cast is great here with Oscar Isaacs, Rebecca Ferguson and Timothy Chalamet all doing wonderful jobs with their roles.

There is so much that this film has to offer and it will take multiple viewing in order to take it all in.

There is no question that Denis Villeneuve knows how to make powerful films but this one will be judged by the whole scope of the story if it is eventually made which is quite a shame. (Let’s hope it gets green lit soon!!)

Recommended!

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Warners Bros. announced that the movie will be streamed on HBO Max just as it hits the theaters. Director Denis Villeneuve has voiced his displeasure, claiming that the studio “might have just killed the film” and that “streaming can produce great content, but not movies of Dune’s scope and scale. Warner Bros.’ decision means Dune won’t have the chance to perform financially in order to be viable and piracy will ultimately triumph. […] My team and I devoted more than three years of our lives to make it a unique big screen experience. Our movie’s image and sound were meticulously designed to be seen in theaters.” Although Villeneuve also expressed concerns that releasing the film on streaming would kill its box office potential, and thereby the viability of the proposed sequel Dune: Part Two, Warner Bros has given assurances that the sequel will be greenlit as long as the movie performs well on HBO Max. Rating – Globe Worthy (7/10)
