Genre Guesstimation – The Misadventures of Merlin Jones (1964)

The idea behind this feature (Genre Guesstimation) is for me to watch a bunch of new movies (or ones that I haven’t seen many times) from the chosen monthly GG genre in order to expand my knowledge of movies within that particular genre.

This month’s genre has been chosen by Marc of French Toast Sundays and we will be reviewing our favorite Live Action Disney Films.

Please get me your submissions by the 25th of Nov by sending them to disneylivemarc@movierob.net

Tnx Marc!

Try to think out of the box!

Let’s see if I felt that this movie would be worthy of being in the company of my others favorite movies in the genre of Live Action Disney Films…….

“Maybe I’ve been a bit rough on the police department and I’m prepared t be a little more reasonable in the future.. if..” – Judge Holmsby

Number of Times Seen – 1 (8 Nov 2021)

Brief Synopsis – A college student gets into lots of trouble when an experiment goes wrong and he begins to have received the ability to read the minds of those around him.

My Take on it – This is yet another film that I had never heard of before coming across it during my research for this month’s genre.

The tone of the film is perfectly set and they are able to find a great balance between humor and serious situations.

The story moves along at a great pace and stays enjoyable throughout.

The way that the plot is able to integrate the notions of mind reading (clairvoyance) and hypnotism is done really well and it able to elicit both laughter and curiosity as to how these two concepts might actually work.

Tommy Kirk and Annette Funicello are both great here in the lead roles and their chemistry is great the whole way through which adds so much to the seriousness of the story.

the story manages to stay fascinating the whole way through and that helps keep it so enjoyable to watch.

Recommended!

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – During filming Tommy Kirk was caught having sex with a 15-year-old boy at a local swimming pool in Burbank. The boy’s mother discovered informed Disney, who elected not to renew Kirk’s contract. Walt Disney personally fired Kirk. (From IMDB)

Genre Grandeur Worthy? – Comes really close because the story is great and presented in such a fun and fascinating way.

Rating – Globe Worthy (8/10)
