Batman: The Long Halloween, Part One (2021)

“A killer who only works on holidays… There’s lots of crazy out there.” – Calendar Man

Number of Times Seen – 1 (18 Nov 2021)

Brief Synopsis – Batman must try and find a new villain named Holiday who mysteriously only kills on holidays.

My Take on it – This is a nice new view of the Batman stories.

Batman is not the best kind of detective in this version and is often chided by Commissioner Gordon of that fact especially when various criminals are released due to lack of evidence.

The film does a nice job of giving the viewer a view of the ensemble nature of the villains of Gotham and Batman finds himself bot confronting and interrogating these villains in order to find new information about the killer.

The story prominently displays the notion that Gotham isn’t being run by the villains like The Joker, but rather by the mafia led by Falcone.

The story sets things up really well and leave the identity of this new villain so ambiguous during the investigation that Batman begins to have some very familiar people on his list of possible suspects.

The animation is great and the choice to once again make these animated films more for adults than for kids works quite well in raising the suspense level and the stakes at the same time.

IT also allows for these characters to use more ‘colorful metaphors’ along the way which adds to the realism of it all.

Recommended!

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – This film is dedicated to Catwoman’s voice artist, Naya Rivera, who accidentally drowned in 2020. (From IMDB)

Rating – Globe Worthy (7/10)
