Number of Times Seen – Too many to count (Theater, DVD, 5 Aug 2013, 4 Apr 2019 and 21 Nov 2021)
Brief Synopsis – As a destructive asteroid hurdles towards the planet, NASA sends a group of expert drillers to land on the rock and change it’s path so that it won’t hit Earth.
My Take on it – This is a really fun, yet silly Michael Bay Summer movie that works on numerous levels.
The characters are all really enjoyable to watch and their camaraderie and chemistry is great because of their shared experiences.
The music helps make the impending disaster feel even more threatening and scary and that adds so much to the suspense and tension throughout.
The special effects are great and stand up quite well even after more than 2 decades.
The cast is fun to watch and Bruce Willis and Ben Affleck are great in these roles.
The science of the film has often been brought into question, yet they still make it seem quite believable for those of us with minimal to know scientific background.
The action sequences are done expertly and this make sit so much more thrilling to watch unfold.
The movie’s theme song by Aerosmith is amazing and fits in so well with this kind of story.
Listen to it here:
There is very little drama here and the few scenes that might add a tear here or there are far and few between, but as a powerful action thing, it’s hard to find a disaster movie more entertaining than this one.
MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – According to the Criterion Collection commentary, many of the errors found in the film were acknowledged by the director, and known even during filming and production and were left in deliberately (such as fire in space). Michael Bay said, “It’s a movie and not many people know about it”, so they were kept in for entertainment value. (From IMDB)
Rating – Globe Worthy (8/10) (no change from original review)
