Heart of Champions (2021)

“No man is an island. Whatever you do after graduation, you have to find your way with the people around you. They need to rely on you and you need to rely on them. Because the time may come when your success, your happiness, maybe even your flesh and blood survival will be at stake. And you won’t make it on your own. So, yes, Kimball, you are here to learn. You are going to learn something that can’t be taught in a book or a classroom. Out on that river, men, you will learn how to be a team. Not an island. ” – Coach Jack Murphy

Number of Times Seen – 1 (22 Nov 2021)

Brief Synopsis – A rowing team at an unnamed Ivy League college gets a new coach who tries to train them into a winning team.

My Take on it – This is a film that I heard about a few months ago and was interested in seeing largely due to the fact that it stars Michael Shannon.

Shannon is truly the best part of this film and he manages to shine throughout even when the story fails to stay afloat.

The characters aren’t developed very well and most of the team members don’t even have anything about them besides perhaps a name which is a problem.

The training scenes are the est parts of this film and it allows for Shannon to once again prove that he can play just about any kind of role.

The story starts of well and the first half that deals with the various training regiments for the crew is enjoyable.

The problem is that the story itself spirals out of control around the mid-point and turns this film into something very different than a typical sports underdog film and that takes so much away from the powerful first part which is quite a shame.

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – The film comes from executive producers Cameron Winklevoss and Tyler Winklevoss, Harvard alums who rowed for the school and later competed in the Olympics. (From IMDB)

Rating – BAFTA Worthy (6/10)
