The idea behind this feature (Genre Guesstimation) is for me to watch a bunch of new movies (or ones that I haven’t seen many times) from the chosen monthly GG genre in order to expand my knowledge of movies within that particular genre.
This month’s genre has been chosen by Emily Slade of Why This Film Podcast and we will be reviewing our favorite Non-Disney Animated Films of the 90’s.
Please get me your submissions by the 25th of Dec by sending them to nondisneyemily@movierob.net
Tnx Emily!
Try to think out of the box!
Let’s see if I felt that this movie would be worthy of being in the company of my others favorite movies in the genre of Non-Disney Animated Films of the 90’s……..
“I need to know that he loves me for just being me.” – Odette
Number of Times Seen – 1 (7 Dec 2021)
Brief Synopsis – A young princess is cursed by an evil wizard in order to try and gain control of her father’s kingdom.
My Take on it – I decided that in order to make my guest choices of the Genre for the Genre Grandeur series more personal (and expand my own personal horizons of these genres), I will take a recommendation from my guest for a film to watch for this Genre Guesstimation series.
This film was Emily’s choice for me to watch.
I had actually never heard of film before she suggested it and was quite intrigued to see what it was all about.
The story is told in a great fashion and it was so easy to feel a connection to these characters as the story unfolds in ways that one might expect.
The animation is stellar and helps transport the viewer into a far away, long ago magical kingdom.
They were able to get some great voice cast members for this film and that enhances the supporting characters.
Steven Wright, John Cleese, Dakin Matthews and Sandy Duncan are all great in their parts, but Jack Palance steals every scene that he appears in as the villain.
The story is a simple one, yet finds a way to stay engaging and surprising as things move along.
I was quite surprised at how enjoyable this way and was very pleased that a small studio could make such an animated film that works so well because of the power of the characters and story throughout.
Recommended!
MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – This was the last animated feature that was made using only traditional animation (i.e. cels, ink and paint). It took four years to produce the movie. (From IMDB)
Genre Grandeur Worthy? – Not quite… Comes really close tho.
Rating – Globe Worthy (8/10)

I remember this one being a favorite of my childhood. For some reason, I thought it was a Don Bluth film, but it was actually from a former Disney guy, Richard Rich who directed The Fox and the Hound. There have been several direct-to-video sequels as well, but I only recall seeing the first two and liking them as a kid.
