Genre Guesstimation – Half-Baked (1998)

The idea behind this feature (Genre Guesstimation) is for me to watch a bunch of new movies (or ones that I haven’t seen many times) from the chosen monthly GG genre in order to expand my knowledge of movies within that particular genre.

This month’s genre has been chosen by Jason Soto of The Rabbit Hole Podcasts and we will be reviewing our favorite Comedies that feature characters who are either Stoners or Drunks..

Try to think out of the box!

Let’s see if I felt that this movie would be worthy of being in the company of my others favorite movies in the genre of Comedies that feature characters who are either Stoners or Drunk………

Number of Times Seen – 1 (5 Jan 2022)

Brief Synopsis – A stoner janitor tries to get his life on track after meeting the girl of his dreams while trying to find a way to pay the bind of his friend who was wrongfully arrested.

My Take on it – While doing research for this months genre, I came across this film and knowing that Dave Chappelle can be really funny, I decided to see what it was all about.

Unfortunately, the characters are far too superficial and most of the jokes failed miserably.

There is no chemistry what so ever between these various characters and the story never seems to really work on any level at all.

Loved seeing Steven Wright in a cameo appearance even though his character has very little to do throughout the film.

The romance aspect of the story also fails to work and the entire time, I kept wondering what this woman found interesting about the character played by Chappelle which is quite mind boggling the whole way through.

The plot is completely absurd and makes no sense at all and is completely insane.

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – While Dave Chappelle was on Inside the Actors Studio (1994) in 2006, he revealed that he was unhappy with the final product and claimed that the script he co-wrote was much funnier, and that the final result was “a weed movie for kids”. (From IMDB)

Genre Grandeur Worthy? – Not even close. This was an insane film that wasn’t funny at all.
