Genre Guesstimation – Pineapple Express (2008)

The idea behind this feature (Genre Guesstimation) is for me to watch a bunch of new movies (or ones that I haven’t seen many times) from the chosen monthly GG genre in order to expand my knowledge of movies within that particular genre.

This month’s genre has been chosen by Jason Soto of The Rabbit Hole Podcasts and we will be reviewing our favorite Comedies that feature characters who are either Stoners or Drunk..

Please get me your submissions by the 25th of Jan by sending them to stonerjason@movierob.net

Tnx Jason!

Try to think out of the box!

Let’s see if I felt that this movie would be worthy of being in the company of my others favorite movies in the genre of Comedies that feature characters who are either Stoners or Drunk………

“[talking about Pineapple Express] It’s almost a shame to smoke it. It’s like killing a unicorn… with, like, a bomb.” – Saul

Number of Times Seen – Twice (17 Mar 2009 and 16 Jan 2022)

Brief Synopsis – A slacker and his drug dealing friend get into trouble when he witnesses a murder perpetrated by a corrupt cop and the local drug kingpin.

My Take on it – Fun idea that just doesn’t work well enough despite the stellar Judd Apatow cast.

Seth Rogan is perfect in the lead role in  script that he himself wrote.

The story takes some aspects to the extreme which go too far and  actually hurt things more than helps make it more engaging to watch.

The characters played by Rogan and James Franco are quite believable as stoners, but the story puts them in some crazy situations which don;t work at all in helping to keep things more grounded.

None of the characters feel developed at all and the film has too many stereotypes and movie tropes that make it all far too silly and predictable along the way.

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – The first marijuana-themed comedy to gross over $100 million worldwide. (From IMDB)

Genre Grandeur Worthy? – Not really. Rogan and Franco are great here in these roles, but the story itself is lacking.

Rating – BAFTA Worthy (5/10)
