Ace Ventura: Pet Detective (1994)

“If I’m not back in five minutes… just wait longer. ” – Ace Ventura

Number of Times Seen – At least twice (Video in 90’s and 20 Jan 2022)

Brief Synopsis – A detective who specializes in Animal cases is tasked with finding the missing mascot of the Miami Dolphins football team.

My Take on it – Fun film that goes a bit too far in certain scenes.

Jim Carrey helps personify this kind of character quite well and the mannerisms and actions of the character are so quirky, yet feel more grounded since Carrey plays the character.

The biggest problem here is that the over idea is a good one but it fails to be more engaging due to the silliness of it all.

Carrey’s character is so eccentric that he lacks any kind of real chemistry with any of the supporting cast, most especially Courtney Cox who is meant to be his love interest.

The character of Ace Ventura and his mannerisms has become iconic due to Carrey’s performance, but that still doesn’t help the fact that this gets far too silly and stays there the whole time.

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – The voice of Ace Ventura and the manner in which he speaks was added by Jim Carrey only after several read throughs of the script. The voice was something Carrey used in his stand up routine. The “All righty then” was the catch phrase of one of his stand up characters and after the lines from the script weren’t feeling right, he added it to the script and read through it again using that voice for all the lines. It was such an improvement that it became the main Ace Ventura personality trait. (From IMDB)

Rating – BAFTA Worthy (5/10)
