The Mask (1994)

“S-ssss-ssss-sssss-smokin’!” – The Mask

Number of Times Seen – 1 (21 Jan 2022)

Brief Synopsis – A mild mannered bank employee has his life changed when he finds a magical mask that transforms him into a superhero when he puts it on.

My Take on it – This is a film that I saw bits and pieces of over the years, yet never had the opportunity to watch it from start to finish until now.

For some reason, I didn’t expect to enjoy it, but was pleasantly surprised at how enjoyable and entertaining it was.

Jim Carrey is superb in this role and his abilities of physical elasticity helps so much in making this character work so well.

The special effects used also obviously help in giving this character a more cartoonish feel to it, but it still works largely due to Carrey’s performance here.

The story itself comes across quite well and makes a lot of sense within the realm of the world that this takes place in.

The villains are a bit too buffoonish and it might have been even better if they had more depth to them.

The supporting cast is also great with Cameron Diaz, Peter Riegert, Amy Yasbeck and Peter Greene all adding so much to the way things play out.

The way that the story plays out works well and constantly keeps the viewer engaged which helps make it so much fun from start to finish.

Recommended!

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Chuck Russell revealed that a lot of money was saved on special effects after Jim Carrey was cast. Carrey’s body movements were so flexible and cartoonish, they didn’t see the need to enhance them digitally. (From IMDB)

Rating – Globe Worthy (7/10)
