“Love sure is a funny thing. Makes you happy, makes you sad, makes you do all sorts of things you never thought you’d do before. In fact, love’s the reason I’m laying here dying.” – Steven Russell
Number of Times Seen – 1 (23 Jan 2022)
Brief Synopsis – After coming out, a cop leaves the life of the law and becomes a con man.
My Take on it – This is a movie that I had never even heard of before coming across it in my quest to watch more movies featuring Jim Carrey.
I was also surprised to learn that this story is based on real events and that piqued my interest even more.
Carrey has mediocre chemistry with his on screen lover played by Ewan MacGregor which hurts things too much since in a film like this, that chemistry needs to feel as real as possible.
The story jumps around too much in time with these characters while trying to establish something greater, but in the end, all they manage to do is make things more complicated and perplexing to the viewer.
There are far too many scenes that drag along at a slower pace and that also hurts things too much when trying to establish a connection between the audience and this main character.
With such a great cast, it’s a shame that they weren’t able to bring forth something more interesting and engaging.
MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – While on set in New Orleans and filming at the Orleans Parish Prison, one of the extras dressed as an OPP inmate was arrested by a real OPP Jail guard after leaving the set in costume to put some belongings away in his car. (From IMDB)
Rating – BAFTA Worthy (5/10)
