MovieRob’s Birthday Bash of Favorites 2022 (#42 of 49) – Come From Away (2021) – Encore Review

January is my birthday month, so I decided that I would try and do something quite unique and special for this milestone in my life. I will be turning 48, so I decided to watch 49 (48+1 for good luck) of my all time favorite movies in a random order over the course of this month.  I have reviewed every one of these films already, but I will now give new perspectives on them all. Every one of these films received a 10/10 scoring from me.  Some of these reviews will contain spoilers so if you have never seen them before, I recommend that you read some of my previous reviews of the film that are spoiler free before reading on…

Hope you enjoy!

This is film #42 of the 49.

Let’s continue with…

“What’s the point of an emergency if no one treats it like an effing emergency? And you can quote me on that.” – Claude Elliott

Initial Viewing Memories – I came across this right before 9/11 this year and didn’t know what to expect. I was blown away by the production, songs and stories that they told here and it shot right to the top of my favorite films from 2021 and still stays way up there.

Brief Synopsis – Following the attacks of 9/11, US airspace is closed and 38 flights are diverted to a small airfield in Gander, Newfoundland

My Take on it – This is a musical that had such a profound effect on me.

When I originally heard that it was a 9/11 musical, I couldn’t understand how one could actually make something like that and after having now watched it a second time, I can’t imagine NOT making something like this.

The way that they are able to take a day known for the evil that occurred and find the bright shining light of the people of Gander is unbelievable.

The music is very catchy and they also create such memorable lyrics that are able to tell the various stories of what happened in this very special place.

The fact that they were able to create full stories of so many people with just 12 actors on stage is amazing.

The production and sets are quite simplistic, yet they find ways to change so much of the set during the sings and action which is quite breathtaking to watch.

I’m still resonating and on a high from watching this film and there is still no doubt in my mind that this is my top film of 2021!

Can’t wait to see this again and wouldn’t it be amazing to be able to one day see this on the stage.

Highly Highly Recommended!

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – It was originally planned to be a feature film adaptation of the musical with filming done on location in Newfoundland and using its community as extras, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic’s impact on the film industry and performing arts, those plans were canceled in favor of a live film recording of the Broadway production. Rating – Oscar Worthy (10/10) (no change from original review)
